Main tasks of cosmetics for infants

Due to the fact that the skin of a young child is very delicate and easily dries out, it requires specialist and thought-out care, which should fulfil the following tasks:

  • Effective lubrication and protection
  • Intensive hydration
  • Soothing and calming irritation

Effective lubrication and protection

As a result of the absence of a sealed, protective hydrolipid layer on the surface of the epidermis, infant skin is more delicate and susceptible to harmful external factors. In order to prevent this, intensive and regular lubrication is required. In this case, the use of cosmetic products with strong occlusive properties, which strengthen the skin's protective functions, is recommended. Their ingredients should include active substances such as caprylic/capric acid triglycerides, olive squalane, ceramide, lanolin or petroleum jelly and vegetable oils rich in essential fatty acids (e.g. sea buckthorn, jojoba, soybean, borage, evening primrose).

Proper care is required not only for children suffering from serious skin conditions such as AD, but also for healthy children. In this case it is important that cosmetic products are based on the most-natural formulas, don't overly burden the skin and allow it to fully breathe. That's why for healthy children the use of strong emollients containing high concentrations of mineral oils and other petroleum derivatives is not recommended. It is also important that the chosen skincare product is intended for the child's age group.

Intensive moisturising.

Due to the absence of a sealed, protective hydrolipid layer and a not-fully-developed natural moisturising factor (NMF), in children we can observe an increased loss of water from the surface of the epidermis (TEWL - transepidermal water loss), which contributes to drying out of the skin. That's why one of the main directions in children's skincare is intensive moisturising. To this end we must use skincare products that contain active ingredients with long-lasting water-binding properties in deeper skin layers, such as glycerine, glucose and amino acids, and urea.

Soothing and calming irritation

An essential part of a child's daily skincare regimen is also calming and soothing irritation, which may arise both due to atmospheric factors and improper care. Also important are nappies and clothes, which may cause skin chaffing. This is why skincare cosmetics for children should contain active substances with anti-inflammatory properties that support the skin's regenerative processes, such as allantoin, D-panthenol, chamomile, zinc oxide and cucurbitin extracted from pumpkin seeds.
